Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Also called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT as it is more commonly known is an increasingly popular treatment for maladaptive thinking, i.e. the mistaken beliefs and understandings we create and reinforce through our lives.

These beliefs (cognitions) give meaning to events in our lives that are inaccurate, or to put it another way, it is not the events that give rise to bad feelings or reactions, but the meanings we attach to those events. As negative thoughts or anxiety build up and consolidate over time, they become beliefs.

In using CBT, the therapist will identify and evaluate the negative thoughts and perceptions impacting on the client and help them change the way they are thinking and this changes the way they feel. The client learns to become more flexible in their thinking and able to accept and adapt more, so developing better coping skills and strategies.

A significant benefit of using CBT lies in its high success rate as recognised by health professionals, clinicians and the Government and that it shows a significantly reduced relapse rate.

A CBT programme will have a plan of action and the client will be given self-help assignments at each session to be completed during the following week. This latter is particularly important as the client must participate in their own therapy regime. CBT is not a 'silver bullet'. Negative thoughts and actions may have built up and habituated 24 by 7 over many years. Collaboration and participation by the client with the therapist to explore and experiment with different ways for the client to resolve their difficulties is an essential part of the therapy.

Basic CBT techniques can be applied within Hypnosis. NLP can be used with CBT to accelerate change and mentoring techniques then applied to help the client set life enhancing goals.

Typically CBT can be used to treat
