Anxiety, Fear & Phobias

Do your nerves get the better of you, are anxiety attacks a worry or do you just worry about all sorts of things?  Perhaps you have a fear about an impending event? Do you suffer from panic attacks or do you have a full blown phobia?

Hypnotherapy with NLP and CBT techniques can help. A relatively short programme could change your life.

Anxiety

While all have their roots in fear, anxiety can be termed a state of apprehension or worry and may be quite general in nature. Although the sensations may be very similar to those of fears and phobias, which are reactions to past events, the sufferer is anxious about the occurrence or outcome of a future event. Here the tendency is to think the worst will happen, based either on a previous experience or an imaginary outcome. In short, there is a tendency to ‘catastrophise’ situations.

That we realise this on a rational or conscious level doesn’t stop our subconscious constructing all manner of dire outcomes, whether this be driving test nerves, exam nerves, the social anxiety of an imminent family get-together or other social occasion, or the thought of having to make a speech or presentation. Most people have heard that little voice that warns of impending disaster or failure; something like “When Jack and Jill find out what you’ve done, boy I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes!”, or "You're going to make a real fool of yourself in front of all those people!"

As with so many problems, this may be down to the way we have coded past experiences and are using this mental map of the past to inform the possible scenario of the future, without any real evidence that this will be the case. It may on the other hand be the effect of low self-confidence or low self-esteem.

While the projected outcome may in fact occur, it is unlikely to have the severe repercussions anticipated. Even so, worrying about something that hasn’t happed yet and may be quite mild if it does is not setting you up to comfortably deal with it.

Phobias

Phobias lie at the other end of the Fear Spectrum and can sometimes be so severe as to lead to a crippling paralysis. Is a silly fear or phobia stopping you from getting the most out of life, or is it more of an embarrassment? Wouldn't it be great to get rid of it? Hypnotherapy and NLP can help and it's all so easy.

We are all aware that fears are, in the most part irrational and illogical. I have heard fear described as an acronym for

False Evidence Appearing Real. That being said, to a sufferer the fear or phobia manifests itself as a very real and uncomfortable feeling up to and including paralysis in some cases.

The reason we react in a fearful way is because of the way we have coded memories of past events (stimuli). When we next encounter the same or similar stimuli, we react as if the threat was real. More common phobias include fear of flying, fear of lifts, fear of spiders and other insects, cats, dogs, heights and falling.

This can even be the case with apparently unrelated stimuli. Take for example a fear of people in white lab coats.

This may result from a distant event when there was a bad experience in a hospital or medical centre, perhaps a painful or very unpleasant injection from a doctor or nurse who was wearing a white a coat. So in addition to a fear or phobia about injections, there is the apparent unrelated fear of people in white coats, because the way we coded that experience included a person wearing a white coat.

Treatment

Depending on how deep seated or complex the issue, Paradoxically, phobias may be resolved in a single NLP  session, because they tend to be so subject specific. Anxiety disorders tend to have more complex origins and may impact on a wider range of life activities.

The programme  starts with an initial consultation to investigate the client’s issues, how the symptoms present, and likely causes. Because the problem is often deep-seated and has a potentially wide range of adverse affects, a multi-therapy approach is typical. The first session usually includes a hypnotherapy session to boost self-confidence and self-esteem to help stabilize the client. Subsequent sessions will use a combination of NLP and hypnotherapy along with Time Line Therapy and possibly Cognitive Behaviour Therapy techniques. The client will also learn self-hypnosis techniques and NLP coping strategies.

The treatment will typically call for a number of sessions, the first 3 at weekly intervals with a further 2 at fortnightly intervals and a final session after a further 4 weeks. By the end of the programme, the client should have all the tools needed to cope with any future issues.
